Wellington Skin Project

In November 2004 a report (pdf 1MB) by Dr Darren Hunt, 'Assessing and Reducing the Burden of Serious Skin Infections in children and young people in the Greater Wellington Region', was launched at Windley School in Porirua. This report describes an increase in the numbers of serious skin infections.

Since the launch of this report a number of activities have taken place. Over 200 nurses and community workers have received training and all have been provided with a folder of resources to assist with the prevention of serious skin infections.

Thirteen schools across the region are focusing on preventing skin infections and are promoting the slogan 'Clean, Cut, Cover' in newsletters and within the school curriculum. Some have also been working on improving first aid practices and hand washing facilities. In the Hutt Valley four schools have had support from ACC and have been provided with skin kits to give to children if an injury occurs at school. This work will continue to grow and hopefully we will have more schools interested in joining next year.

A number of Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) have identified skin infections in their health promotion plans. Each PHO has selected an area of focus to suit their communities needs, e.g. South East City PHO has identified eczema, and a variety of people are working together to improve access to high quality services aimed at reducing hospital admissions due to infected eczema.

Other work is being done with the Ministry of Education, ACC, and Work and Income.

In December 2007 a report 'Evaluation of the Reducing Serious Skin Infections project' was released, for more information please click here.
